Driving Sustainable Development in the Lake Victoria Basin
The Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) is a premier government agency with a steadfast commitment to driving integrated socio-economic development within the Lake Victoria Basin. Established by an Act of Parliament (CAP 442) on August 31, 1979, LBDA was founded to harness the vast natural resources of the region and ensure that these resources are utilized in a sustainable manner to uplift the communities we serve.

Planning and Development: We are tasked with developing long-term, comprehensive development plans that guide the sustainable use of the region’s resources, including land, water,

minerals, and more.
- Project Implementation: LBDA initiates, coordinates, and oversees a wide array of development projects. These range from infrastructure development to environmental conservation, all aimed at improving livelihoods and fostering economic growth.
- Resource Management: Ensuring the sustainable utilization and conservation of the Lake Basin’s natural resources is central to our mission. We balance development needs with environmental stewardship, protecting the region for future generations.

Area of Jurisdiction
The organization’s area of jurisdiction covers a land area of approximately 39,240 km2 exclusive of a Lake area of about 4,000 Km2, which is about 6.9% of the total land area of Kenya. The region traverses a total of 18 counties – 15 counties namely Kisumu, Siaya, Busia, Homabay, Migori, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Bomet, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho and 3 other counties namely, West Pokot, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Nakuru which are partially covered.
